Identity theft is a serious crime with serious costs for victims. ID theft occurs when someone obtains your personal information - such as your Social Security Number, credit card or account numbers, passwords, among others - to defraud or commit crimes. Victims of identity theft may lose significant money and time, and may find their reputation and credit rating has been damaged, affecting the ability to obtain loans for education or housing, approval for rental agreements, and approval for credit cards or large purchases requiring credit.

In 2015, Attorney General Maura Healey, wanted to create a division that was heavily focused in helping every community in the Massachusetts area. For that reason, she started the Community Engagement Division. Join Oumou Cherif, Outreach Coordinator, and Yarlennys Villaman, Outreach Director within Healey's Community Engagement team as they educate consumers on how to protect personal information to prevent identity theft and about the steps to take when identity theft is discovered. As well as detecting the different methods a scammer uses and some resources regarding COVID19. 

Ms. Cherif is a Guinean-native, Boston-based community advocate.  Throughout the years, Ms. Cherif has dedicated her life to activism. Her involvement includes partnerships with the Student Immigrant Movement, African Youth Excellence Inc., and Progressive Organization for the Women of Africa. Since joining the AG’s office in 2019, Ms. Cherif has conducted trainings on a wide range of topics such as Worker’s Rights as it relates to adults and teens, Identity Theft, Unauthorized Practice of Immigration Law and more. As a member of the People’s Law Firm, Ms. Cherif takes pride in being resourceful, and she hopes to continue to connect communities across the state through AGO’s resources, services, and educational materials.

Yarlennys has worked on issues and educational campaigns ranging from Workers’ Rights, Landlord and Tenant Rights, Immigrants’ Rights, and everything in between.  As an Outreach Director, Ms. Villaman, is dedicated in bringing communities across the state  information about the resources and services the Attorney General’s Office offers.
